BHARAT SIKKA

Twenty four weddings

’24 Weddings’ takes its name from a single extraordinary encounter: twenty-four weddings taking place simultaneously in one village in Rajasthan, twenty-four grooms, twenty-four brides, twenty-four baraats moving through the same narrow lanes at the same time. Bharat found himself inside this moment while travelling through the region to make his book ‘Rajasthan’ for Louis Vuitton. The exhibition holds this encounter as its anchor, but what surrounds it is broader. He moves through landscape, ceremony, and everyday life across Rajasthan, and the images shift in register throughout. Some are found, others staged, and he moves freely between the two, allowing performance and chance to coexist without one undermining the other. Collage enters as another way of seeing, fragmenting and reassembling what a single photograph cannot hold alone. Through the interplay of performance, landscape, and collage, the artist opens a contemporary conversation around what it means to look at Rajasthan today, its people, its rituals, its visual weight, and what gets made, and remade, in the act of photographing it.
