PHOTOINK is pleased to present Nowhere Is Home, an exhibition of photographs by Abhishek Khedekar, Devashish Gaur & Yashna Kaul.
Conceived and curated by artist, Bharat Sikka, Nowhere Is Home is an ongoing conversation about the domestic space and the family album and how photography is able to transform memories into artefacts by giving them a material presence. We often look at pictures in our family albums and feel drawn to them—to find a version of ourselves, to make stories out of them, and perhaps re-live some altered moment, distorted by memory, to recall and to sometimes forget, and in some cases to revisit a place with an overwhelming feeling of nostalgic belonging. The artists in this exhibition combine found and newly created images to engage with and present their idea of home. The notion of home is quite complex and riddled with paradoxes and contradictions. It is a space of comfort, haven and sanctuary while it is also beset by tension and conflicts. It is a social construct wherein the tangible such as a place, dwelling, location and collection of objects assume significance. However, it is also a feeling formed by fragility and strength of human relations. Home can simultaneously be a site of belonging, estrangement, confinement, conflicted memories, fear, love, longing, intimacy and tyranny. It is this shifting, restless idea of home that is explored in this exhibition by the three artists.Abhishek Khedekar looks at his hometown of Dapoli, a coastal hill station in Maharashtra, and produces unaltered compositions. The landscape is the site he chooses to engage with his childhood memories. He also appropriates into his work photographs made by the first photographer from Dapoli, Subhash Kolekar and grapples with what was, what is and how he imagines it. Devashish Gaur grew up with a deep affinity for a grandfather he never met, one who was a freedom fighter, teacher, radio jockey, poet and photographer. By photographing his domestic space and using the family album images in collages, he opens pathways to reconnect not only with his grandfather and distant father but also to examine his presence and sense of self. Yashna Kaul uses her father’s photographs to understand his experience with early onset of Alzheimer’s and her conflicted family history. Her collages attempt to reconstruct and preserve his memories by piecing together scenes he photographed during family vacations. There is a telling absence of her own image in her work which speak to unspoken issues of polygamy and estrangement.PHOTOINKA-4 Green Avenue Street
